*Sigh* Fireworks will never be the same again! Every fourth of July, Jay and I, along with many others, go up to the roof of the castle to watch every fireworks show from East of Montclair. You can even see a few shows to the south and to the west.

Upon further google research, aparently, before the castle was purchased by the firm, it was in habited by a cult! Bhagwan Shri Rahneesh and his cult were rumored to have 85 Rolls Royces, and a fleet of private jets. After the sale, they moved to Oregon, and drew national media attention when they tried to takeover a town. They allegedly made homeade e-coli, and infected 751 people in an attempt to lower voting turnout on election day! The attack was the first bioterrorism attack in modern US History, and the town of the Dalles, Oregon is still suffering years later. Crazy!

This post took a strange turn, but I wish Mr Tobia and his partners good fortune in their quest to sell the property.

On ESPN Radio today, the topic of Tiger Woods showing emotion was brought up today. Tiger attracts new vewers to the sport of golf, such as myself. When he makes a bad shot, sometimes he swears, and sometimes he throws his club. I don't condone such behaivior, but I understand it. In todays sports, there is more competition than ever before. The stakes are higher, the money is greater, and the performances are top tier. With higher competition comes stronger emotion. I commend those who are able to maintain their composure under such conditions, but does that mean you lack the fire to be the best?

Hello Ms. Jeri,

I have never met you, and I only new Laquan on an acquaintance level, but I was very deeply saddened to hear of his loss. I want you to know that Laquan had such a positive affect on my life. I am also a minority who graduated from MKA. I looked up to Laquan very much. He was an upperclassman who I saw conquer our high school, both as a Cougar and a Black Man. Through him, I gained the confidence to do the same. We also had a mutual friend in Fran De La Torre. Once, I believe in the summer of 2001, she brought him to my birthday party. I will never forget the love he showed me. He was such a friendly person. He gave me love as if we had known each other forever. I had a great picture of him and I, picking me up and pretending to throw me in the pool. I will never forget that moment, and the fun we had that night. I wish we had hung out more. I know you already know how great of a man Laquan was. I hope that my great memories of him give you some peace, or perhaps a smile. My prayers are with you and your family.

I have had a few of my friends come up to me and ask why I have not posted recently. Specifically, I have had a friend say, I may not be into sneakers and the such, but I enjoy seeing what you like. Well, as those who know me know, I have a sneaker addiction. Recently, actually not to recently, I would say maybe 3 months ago, I decided enough is enough. No more sneakers. I don't pay attention to the sites that I used to. Yesterday I had some free time, and walked right past one of my favorite sneakers stores. Its kind of like an alcoholic avoiding a bar, I don't want to tempt myself.

However, After months of avoiding anything sneaker related, I find that my mindset has changed. I did go into many sneaker stores last Sunday with Pam, and wasn't interested in buying any. There is even a pair on eBay which I have wanted for a while, and is cheaper than I have seen in any store. I still have been able to resist the purchase. Why? It's not the money. I have come to the understanding that I have allot of sneakers, and I don't need anymore. Sure, I want more, but for now the understanding is greater than the want. For now...

Anyways, I hope to post more in the blog, so to those two or three readers I have (Lauren, Fran :) ) stay tuned!

Yesterday was my first DJ-INT Class at the Scratch academy in New York. It was amazing! I loved every second of it. I truly feel blessed, as this is an incredible opportunity to pursuit my dream of being a DJ.

Class started at 7:15, but I wanted to get there early to make sure I was registered. I had paid for the class a month ago, but never had received notification of registration. I took the 7 to the f and got off on 14th street and 6th Ave, walked a few blocks, and headed to the second floor of 434 Sixth Ave. I took the steps instead of the elevator, and the hallway had this old school 70s wood paneling, and a small musky smell. Met up with Will, the Manager of the Scratch Academy, who confirmed I was actually in the class, which was a relief. Will gave me my materials for the class, and I sat down and did some sudoku for about 45 minutes.

The room was setup with about 15 to 20 turntables in a giant oval. The description of the class on the website said that there would be two people assigned per turntable. However, Will had mentioned about 15 people had registered, so all class members were able to use there own setup.

Around 7:00 pm, a few people started to file in. There were all types, from the dorky looking guy with the button up, sneakers, and khakis, to the guy with oversized sunglasses on, and terribly fake red/white/blue Jordan 13 HI with Dub Zero lasering on them. WOW! But, I didn't make judgment, and just took in who I would be spending my journey with for the next few months.

After a short introduction from Will, the class met the three teachers. DJ J-Smoke is our main instructor. He has won mad DJ competitions. Next we met DJ Revolution, but not the DJ Revolution from the morning show in Cali. Then the last DJ was Grand Wizard Theodore. The man invented the scratch!! It was a little surreal. I do not know much about DJ history, I guess I need to study up.

First thing we did was lean about the basics of the turntable and the vinyl. The vinyl only has one groove. We learned about the platter, the needle, the mixer, needle placement, RPM Speed, tone arm, basic record movements, and how to push and pull the record.

The first activity we did was to identify a visual and tonal cue, and pull the record back, on the left and the right. It was pretty easy to do on the right, as I am right handed. When trying to pull the record back on the left, I found myself using my right hand. I am going to try hard to practice to become ambidextrous.

The next thing we did was learn the baby scratch, a fairly easy scratch where you push on the 1, 2, 3, 4. Even though it was easy, it was cool to see mastering this basic scratch leads you to all other scratches. The last scratch we learned was the release scratch. In this scratch, we found our cue, released the record to play normally, pulled the record back to the cue, and released again. That one was a little trickier.

The last thing we did was a special treat. Theodore did a set! It was crazy! He did all sorts of scratches and needle drops. He made it look easy, but it was really hot. The coolest thing he did was blindfold himself, balance a record on his head, and proceed with a series of maybe 25 or so perfect needle drops. I didn’t even know what a needle drop was until I saw him do it. Pretty cool to see the first person ever to do it the first time you see it.

Overall, I loved it. I can't wait till next Monday. I am going to try and hit up a record store to get some vinyl. I also want to go practice, and I will probably go to that on Wednesday or Thursday.

XBox 360 and the tracker

I recently purchased an XBox 360. It was quite an exhilarating experience! A kid in Florida, who goes by the handle Untitled, created an application that e-mails and/or text messages you when there are 360s available in your area. Brilliant! It only took two days to get my hands on one.

I wrote to Untitled, after sending him a donation for his help:

"I just decided two days ago to get the 360. I knew about the shortage of units, so I checked out the forums on xbox.com to look for any release information. I saw the thread about your tracker and gave it a try. It works like a charm. Yesterday I picked up mine from a best buy in NJ, near my apartment. Today, I took a co-worker to the Best Buy in Midtown Manhattan, 5 blocks from where I work. I had JUST received notification, and we raced over. When I asked the customer service rep what time they had got them in, she said, about 5 minutes before you came in! The look on their face was priceless, "how did you know we had them!?!?" HA! Even the security guards were like, "damn, you knew before we did." You are a genius, and I am happy and proud to support your work! My only wish is that you do the same for PS3, when that comes out in the year 2010!

You might not respect his off the court decisions, but you HAVE to respect his game!

Last night, Kobe dropped 81 on the Toronto Raptors. It is the second highest single game scoring record ever. Wilt Chamberlain, of the 76ers, still holds the record, scoring 100 points against the Knicks on March 2nd, 1962. This is the closest anyone has ever come to breaking that record since David Thompson in 1978.

As one ESPN put it into perspective by explaining that many teams get held under 81 points a game.

It is also sick that the Lakers were down by 18 points in the begining of the third! Lamar Odom said that is when Kobe became mad. Memo to every other team in the NBA: DO NOT GET KOBE MAD!

I certainly hope that ESPN Classic replays this game, as they didn't air it locally on the East Coast. I will be sure to DVR it!

On July 22nd, 2005, the NYPD began randomly searching the belongings of randomly selected subway riders. Every day, I pass a sign, reminding straphangers of this announcement. Recently, I have not seen any searching whatsoever.

It is not as if I ride during off-peak hours, I ride during rush hour. At least 3 times a week I pass through the Port Authority bus terminal. I pass through Grand Central Station every day. I read that Six hundred thousand people pass through grand central station a day, which I am sure, makes it a terrorist’s dream. It’s kind of cool that I work across the street from one of the busiest blocks in the world, but I can’t help but wonder if Grand Central is targeted.

I hope that there is some sort of protection or hidden security. As I walk through the transit system 5 times a week, I see nothing. The most I ever see is two or three police officers at the end of “Urine Alley” at the Port Authority. I have seen inspections at my end of the Grand Central Station subway station maybe five times ever! Certainly not enough times to feel secure.

In searching to find an article proclaiming the end of the “search” era, I have found nothing. Where is the protection? What is the city doing to fight a subway attack? It is the city’s job to protect its citizens. How are the citizens supposed to feel safe in the subways, if the city does not follow through on its plans of protection?

Then again, how safe are these searches in the first place?

The Soup Nazi Man

Today for lunch I picked up a year supply (I hope) of DVD+-Rs at Best Buy. $30 for 100 pack of Sonys, cant really beat that.

After that I checked out The Soup Man. You know, the Soup Nazi guy from Seinfeld. Yeah, he has reopened his shop, and is launching it as a chain. One of the locations is on 42nd and 5th, two blocks from my job.

Great Lobster Bisque. I swear, each bite had at least 2-3 juicy chunks of Lobster. It did not taste like any other Lobster Bisque I have had, but delicious none the less. I got the "Bowl" size soup, which is one up from the "cup" size. I also made my order a combo which included half a pannini. They included two pieces of bread, two small apples, and a piece of chocolate too.

I guess I got a great value for my 16 dollars.

There is a floating dog statue on a pond at a local park in my town. It really looks like a dog is walking on water when you drive by. It is supposed to scare away all the geese that claim the pond and the surrounding park as their home. These geese may look cute, but when I was in Middle School I had to run the mile at this park, appropriately nick named "goose poop park". Your sneakers would be toast, and your mile time would drop if you played hop scotch with the endless goose poop on the pavement.

I guess they need to go back to the drawing board with the floating dog!!! :)

Angus, a town in the UK, has placed a ban on wearing hoodies. They claim that the item of clothing promotes "hooligan culture." To spark descussion on "the problems of youth", Des Smith, a young local artist commisioned by the town of Angus to erect a scuplture, made a sculpture of person wearing a hoody. Needless to say, many townies are quite angry. He named the statue "Nike".

1. Touch - Omarion - This video is sick, and another Neptunes banger. Its amazing how the Neptunes consistently put out bangers, while staying true to their outer space sound. P.S. My girl dances like the girl in the video ;)

2. I Said I Really Love You - Bobby Valentino - This is on some super smooth R&B shit. This is like chilling with your girl, or only playing the song thinking about your girl. This is the type of song that if you don't have a significant other, you want to go out and find one just to listen to the song with.
